Advice to My Younger Self: What I wish I knew Then

Advice to My Younger Self: What I wish I knew Then

As I turn 50, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting. If I could sit down with my younger self over a cup of coffee, there are so many things I’d want to tell her. Life has been a wild ride, full of ups and downs, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. So, here’s what I’d say to 20-year-old me—and maybe you’ll find a little wisdom here too.

1. Embrace Change with Open Arms

When you’re young, change can feel intimidating, even scary. But life is full of twists and turns, and each change brings new opportunities. Embrace them, learn from them, and let them shape you into the person you’re meant to be. Remember, growth often happens outside of your comfort zone.

2. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

There will be moments when things don’t go as planned, when life throws you curveballs that seem overwhelming. But trust me, most of the things you worry about now won’t matter in the long run. Focus on what truly matters—your health, your family, your passions—and let the small stuff go.

3. Invest in Relationships

The people in your life—your family, friends, and loved ones—are your greatest treasures. Nurture those relationships, cherish the time you have with them, and don’t be afraid to show how much you care. As time goes on, you’ll realize that the moments spent with loved ones are the ones you’ll remember the most.

4. Follow Your Passion, Not Just the Plan

It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that you need to follow a specific path to succeed. But sometimes, the best things in life come from following your passion, even if it means deviating from the plan. Trust your instincts, pursue what sets your soul on fire, and don’t be afraid to take risks.

5. Take Care of Your Health—It’s Your Most Valuable Asset

In your 20s, you might feel invincible, but your health is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Start taking care of your body and mind now—exercise, eat well, and make time for self-care. Your future self will thank you.

6. Learn to Say No

You don’t have to please everyone. Saying yes to everything can lead to burnout and resentment. Learn to say no when something doesn’t align with your values or priorities. It’s okay to put yourself first sometimes.

7. Be Kind to Yourself

You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s okay. Be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. Self-compassion is just as important as being kind to others. Remember, you’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.

8. Money Isn’t Everything, But It’s Important

While money isn’t the key to happiness, financial stability is important. Learn to manage your finances wisely, save for the future, and spend on what truly brings you joy. But remember, the best things in life—love, health, and happiness—can’t be bought.

9. Don’t Be Afraid to Stand Up for Yourself

There will be times when you need to speak up, to defend your values or protect your boundaries. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself, even if it’s uncomfortable. Your voice is important, and your feelings are valid.

10. Enjoy the Journey

Lastly, remember to enjoy the journey. Life isn’t just about reaching the destination—it’s about the experiences, the people you meet, and the memories you make along the way. Take time to appreciate the little moments, because they’re what make life truly beautiful.

Final Thoughts If I could go back and share this advice with my younger self, I’d hope it would give her the confidence and reassurance she needed to navigate life’s challenges. But since time travel isn’t an option, I’m sharing these insights with you. Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, or beyond, I hope you find some wisdom in these words as you continue on your own journey.
